How To Apply

Application FAQs

The application contains additional information to help you complete the form. If you encounter further problems, contact us.

What is ApplyAlberta?

ApplyAlberta is the web-based application and transcript system that undergraduate applicants use to apply to Alberta's public postsecondary institutions. Through this service, applicants also authorize institution(s) to request the transfer of high school transcripts from Alberta Education and postsecondary transcripts from participating institutions. The University of Alberta is one of 23 public postsecondary institutions in Alberta involved in the system.

Most UAlberta undergraduate applicants will be directed to ApplyAlberta during the application process to create a personal and academic history profile. Applicants then complete the UAlberta portion of their application and submit payment directly to the University of Alberta.

Information entered in the applicant's ApplyAlberta profile is transferred automatically and displayed within the UAlberta application. Not all information from the ApplyAlberta profile will be re-displayed.

How does transcript authorization work?

When applying to undergraduate programs at the University of Alberta, applicants authorize the University to obtain Alberta high school transcripts from Alberta Education, and transcripts from participating Alberta post-secondary institutions previously attended. There is no charge for this service.

Depending on whether or not the Alberta institution is a participating member of ApplyAlberta, the University of Alberta may be able to obtain transcripts on behalf of the applicant, where required.

Note: Applicants are responsible for obtaining transcripts from non-participating Alberta institutions, out of province institutions as well as institutions outside of Canada.

UAlberta applicants must refer to BearTracks to verify which transcripts they are responsible for obtaining and which the University of Alberta will request on the applicant’s behalf.

Participating Institutions:
Alberta College of Art and Design Alberta Education (Alberta High School) Athabasca University Bow Valley College Concordia University College of Alberta
Grande Prairie Regional College Grant MacEwan University Keyano College King's University College Lakeland College
Lethbridge College Medicine Hat College Mount Royal University NAIT NorQuest College
Northern Lakes College Olds College Portage College Red Deer College SAIT Polytechnic
St. Mary's University College University of Calgary University of Lethbridge

Future participants: Ambrose University College, Canadian University College,0The Banff Centre

As institutions continue to integrate with the ApplyAlberta system, the list of institutions the University of Alberta is able to automatically request transcripts from will be updated. Please check back for updates!

I don't know the date of my Permanent Residency

The effective date is noted on line 45 on your Confirmation of Permanent Residence form or on the back of your Permanent Resident card.

I don't know my postal code

You can look up your postal code on the Canada Post website www.canadapost.ca.

I can't find my school in the list

It's possible that your school name has changed or that we simply have not coded your school into our database. Select "Other" and type in the name of your school.

If you are in the ApplyAlberta application, you will need to select "My school is not listed" and type in the name of your school.

I don't know the exact dates of my attendance

We realize that it would be difficult to determine the specific day you started or ended classes, but we do ask you to provide at least the months and years of your attendance.

I don't have enough room to include all of the schools I attended

Use the Additional Information section under the 'Declaration' tab, to add any information that you didn't have room for in the application form.

I can't find the Term/Faculty/Program I want to apply for

If you can't find the term, faculty, or program you want to apply for:

  1. Check the application deadlines.
  2. You may not have the necessary requirements to apply for the program.
    • For example, a high school applicant applying to Faculty of Business BCom program, which requires postsecondary preparation for entrance.

The application is designed to prevent you from applying for a program passed its deadline or for which you are not eligible.

Why do I have to declare a major and/or minor?

In many cases, admission is based on the area of study so it is necessary to declare this on your application for admission. In some instances you may see 'Not Applicable' as a major; this is usually the case when the degree is highly specialized and it is not logical to declare an area of study. For some general programs you may select 'Undeclared' and decide upon an area of study at a later date.

Why can't I apply for more than one program?

Current and former U of A students are allowed one choice of program on their application. If you wish to be considered for more than one program, you must submit an application for each program.

My payment won't go through but there is nothing wrong with my credit card

Sometimes, due to connectivity problems, the payment authorization is not transmitted properly. Keep trying the payment, ensuring you have entered all credit card information correctly.

I don't have a credit card

You cannot submit the online application without payment by credit card. You will need to use the PDF application form if you are paying by cheque or money order. Be sure to allow sufficient mailing time if applying close to a deadline.
