AP/IB Student Conference

The AP/IB Conference, "Exploring Global Change" is a free, full day event happening at the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) on U of A's North Campus on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

This conference provides Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate students with an opportunity to explore an important set of global issues, network with other students and university faculty, and be exposed to what the University of Alberta has to offer!

Any student currently taking Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate is welcome to attend this event and can register below.

There is no fee to attend and lunch and snacks are provided.



Conference Itinerary


The conference will include the following activities:

12:45–1:30 Lunch Pizza lunch provided
1:30–2:30 Session 3 Four professors speaking on diverse topics related to global change. Plenty of time for Q & A!
2:30–3:30 Session 4
3:30–3:45 Brain Break Snacks provided
3:45–4:45 Afternoon Seminar Current UAlberta student led seminars reflecting on information from all afternoon sessions.

Arrival Time

Our registration desk will be open starting at 8:30 am. The Conference will start at 9:00 am sharp! Please arrive with enough time to check in and get settled before the sessions start.

Venue

All sessions will be held in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) located east of 116 St on 11455 Saskatchewan Drive at the U of A North Campus in Edmonton. All doors on the main floor lead to the CCIS lobby, where we will meet.

Public Transportation

Please see the enclosed map for directions from the main U of A bus stop and LRT station to CCIS.

Pick-up and Drop Off

There is a small alcove (E Lot) on the east side of the CCIS building (off Saskatchewan Drive) that can be used for drop off and pick up.

Driving Directions

Directions to campus can be looked up on the Google Map we have created for this event. There are also specific directions to campus for those coming from outside the city.

Parking

If you are driving to campus, parking can be found at Windsor Car Park on 116 St. There is a flat charge of $5.00 for the day. The lot is accessed off of 116 St.

Coordinator Supervision

Coordinators are welcome to attend, but the U of A does not require students to be supervised during this event.

Meals

A morning and afternoon snack along with a pizza lunch will be provided. Please email dawn.graves@ualberta.ca by March 7, 2012 if you have any dietary concerns. Vegetarian options will be available.

Dress

There is no expected dress code. UAlberta staff will be wearing jeans.

What should you bring?

A well-rested brain! Water bottles are suggested.


Learning Objectives


It is our hope that students will leave the conference having achieved the following learning objectives:

  • A greater appreciation for the diversity of research within particular areas surrounding the theme of the conference.
  • An improved ability to communicate their learning from the sessions to their peers through facilitated discussion (graduate student led seminars).
  • A stronger ability to think critically about the topic of Global Change.
  • Become inspired to learn more about the areas of research presented.

Essay Contest


In conjunction with the conference, students will be invited to submit a 1000 word essay due two weeks after the event, answering the question, What is the biggest challenge facing the world as a result of ‘Global Change’? Students should use information learned during the conference to support their arguments and any additional research they wish to include.

The essays will be adjudicated by a panel from the University of Alberta with the top three entries being awarded cash prizes of $750, $300, and $150, respectively. The winning essay will also be published online on the conference website.

Our 2011 AP/IB Essay Contest winners are:

  3. Faraz Tavoossi ($150)

Out-of-Town Attendees


We have secured hotel room blocks at two venues within walking distance of the conference. Both Lister Conference Centre Guest Rooms (780-492-6056) and Campus Tower Suites Hotel (1-800-709-1824) are available with a price range from $109.00 to $136.00 plus tax. Rates are valid if booked early.
